Lung Cancer — bucking the trend
In North America, cancer rates, and cancer deaths, have been on the decline
for years. Lung cancer, however, continues to buck the trend. Every year,
over 230,000 North Americans are told they have lung cancer. It is the
leading category of cancer death in men, and has even surpassed breast
cancer as the leading category of cancer death in women. On a yearly basis,
more people die of lung cancer than of breast, colon and prostate cancers
combined.
Beyond these unfortunate facts shines a glimmer of hope: the chances for
survival improve significantly if lung cancer is detected early.
Approximately 88 percent of patients diagnosed with stage-one lung cancer
will still be alive in five years.
