Early Detection — key to survival
Lung cancer usually presents with no unique symptoms, making it very
difficult for physicians to distinguish from lesser ailments such as
the common cold or respiratory tract infections. In consequence, most
lung cancer is diagnosed too late for any chance of curative treatment.
Statistics tell us, however, that if lung cancer is detected and treated
before it has a chance to spread to other parts of the body, the hope for
survival is high.
Early detection in action
Imagine two groups of 100 people, all of whom have lung cancer.
The first 100 people have malignant tumors that were not detected early.
In five years, it is likely that 85 of those 100 people will have succumbed
to the disease.
In the second group, 100 people have each been diagnosed with early-stage
cancer — the disease remains confined to their lungs. In five years,
statistics tell us that approximately 80 of those 100 people will still be
alive.
The difference is dramatic. As it says on the website of the World Health
Organization: "Early detection of cancer greatly increases the chances for
successful treatment."
Unfortunately, because of the historical lack of tests such as
LungSign™, very few lung cancers are caught in their early stage.
