LungCancer: — the facts
Lung Cancer is the most deadly form of cancer, accounting for 7.32 million cases
worldwide every year, and one-third of all cancer deaths in both men and women.
Lung cancer mortality exceeds the combined total for the next for most lethal
cancers — breast, colorectal, prostrate and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Despite efforts to develop detection technologies and new treatments, little
progress has been made in reducing lung cancer mortality over the last 30 years.
Overall, the five-year survival rate for people who present with lung cancer is
less than 15 percent. As with most malignancies, the presenting symptomology of
lung cancer is variable, and can be misleading. Lung cancer is both aggressive,
and typically asymptomatic until the disease has progressed to a stage where it
is no longer treatable. Once the detected cancer has metastasized, the five-year
survival rate plummets to a dismal three percent.
There is, however a glimmer of hope. Lung cancer detected at Stage I (localized
lesion < 3cm in diameter) is treatable, with an estimated 88% 10-year survival
rate. (1)
Unfortunately, only 16% of lung cancers are diagnosed while still confined to the
primary site. (2)
LungSign™ has been specifically designed to assess a patient's risk for
early stage lung cancers. It is as sensitive for Stage I lung cancers as it is
for later stage disease. Its performance has been confirmed in a diagnostic
trial, in which one-third of all subjects were eventually discovered to have
lung cancer. This large fraction demonstrates that LungSign™ works in
the most difficult setting, where very high risk patients must be distinguished
from those with lung cancer.
